Gordon at GDI

Can Innovation Save Us From the Six Headwinds?

The growth curves of Western states have been rising for the last 250 years. That's over now, says Robert J. Gordon: the West will have to gear itself to zero growth for the medium-term future.

Gordon is probably today's most widely discussed economist. The American's study entitled "Is U.S. economic growth over?" has triggered an international debate about the end of economic growth. He claims that the innovation potential of the digital revolution is being overestimated and that it will not generate anything like the economic growth associated with the industrial revolutions of the past. Or, as Gordon asks provocatively, what would you rather do without: Twitter, iPad and Amazon, or heating, running water and roads? At the GDI, Robert Gordon will propose a macroeconomic prognosis and provide valuable directions for navigating through a post-growth economy.

After his speech, Gordon will discuss macroeconomic developments with David Bosshart (CEO GDI) and Kurt E. Karl. Karl is Chief Economist at Swiss Re and Managing Director and head of the comany's Economic Research and Consulting. He has been recognized for his economic forecasting accuracy. In 2009, The Wall Street Journal ranked Dr. Karl second out of 50 leading economists surveyed for their predictions. Bloomberg News named him 3rd best of the 65 leading US forecasters. Swiss Re uses the forecasts provided by Dr. Karl and others in its Economic Research and Consulting group to inform its decisions on the composition and duration of the company’s investment portfolio.
