with the 2008 Gottlieb Duttweiler Prize

The 2008 Gottlieb Duttweiler Prize has been awarded to the former Secretary-General of the United Nations and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Kofi A. Annan. The award will be presented in Rüschlikon on 8 September 2008, in the presence of the Swiss President, Mr Pascal Couchepin. The eulogies will be delivered by Mo Ibrahim, British/African entrepreneur and creator of the eponymous foundation, and Adolf Ogi, former Swiss government minister and special advisor to the United Nations.

Kofi A. Annan held various positions at the United Nations from 1962 on, most notably that of Secretary-General from 1996 to 2006. He played a key role in shaping world events during this period of turbulent and conflict-ridden globalisation. Driven by a profound conviction that peace and prosperity are possible only if there is mutual understanding between nations and cultures, he was, and continues to be, tireless in his efforts to improve the well-being of mankind.

The politically impartial Gottlieb Duttweiler Prize is awarded at irregular intervals to individuals for their outstanding achievements on behalf of the wider community. In its fiftieth year the prize is going once again to an outstanding politician, Kofi A. Annan. Endowed with a hundred thousand Swiss francs, it will be formally presented on 8 September 2008 at the newly re-opened Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute (GDI) at Rüschlikon/Zurich in the presence of invited guests, including Pascal Couchepin, President of Switzerland. The eulogies will be delivered by Adolf Ogi, former Swiss government Minister and special advisor to the United Nations, and Mo Ibrahim, successful British/African entrepreneur and creator of the eponymous foundation.
