61st International Retail Summit

„WE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE AS RICH AS WE HAVE BEEN“

Interview with Richard Hyman (PDF)

Mr. Hyman, what is the biggest challenge in retail today?
The biggest challenge we are facing today is the absorbing imported cost inflation against a background of weak consumer demand.

What don’t you believe in any more that you believed in ten years ago? Meaning: What have you changed your mind about and why?
I do not any longer believe in Western economic supremacy. I think we are witnessing the end of an era. We will never again be as relatively rich as we have been.

What idea within retail could change everything?
If retail becomes truly demand-driven, this would to me be a total change. You see the vast majority of retailers today are still supply-led. And this fact represents a fundamental limiting factor for growth.

What was your most important purchase in the last twelve months?
My new wide-screen desktop Mac.

Name three brands that you love!
Apple/Mac, Massimo Dutti, The White Company
